Our inaugural event! An accessible and entertaining two day festival of experimental and avant garde short films in Southend on Sea curated and introduced by award winning comedian and filmmaker Richard Sandling.
Featuring films and filmmakers from all over the world, many of whom will be in attendance to introduce their work.
Tickets are for the whole day and are for three blocks of short films and a minimalist/electro/80s/experimental/no wave disco that will follow the screenings.
Weekend tickets are available for guaranteed entry on Saturday and Sunday – or come for the day!

The intention of the event is to create a welcoming and fun environment for filmmakers to showcase their work to a receptive audience and be a lovely and rewarding experience for everyone involved.
This venue is wheelchair accessible.
As we are running this event in a larger venue, our Covid requirements and restrictions will be in line with both the Government’s and the venue’s legal requirements so please check the main venue’s website for more information on this.
HISTORY
Previously, SBAVFF was a monthly screening event at Resistance Gallery in Bethnal Green, but sadly the nights had to be postponed due to lockdown and, even more tragically, the venue did not survive lockdown.
Rather than start the event up again as a monthly venture, it was decided to make it a weekend festival of short films.
SUBMISSION INFO
If you are a filmmaker/artist who would like to submit any films to be considered for screening then please do keep an eye on Squat Betty Avant Garde Film Festival on Film Freeway for official submission info or do feel free to drop me a link to view your work HERE with the subject “short film submission” and I will give it/them a watch.
ETHOS FOR CONETENT/THEME
I’ve noticed that many short film things have lots of arbitrary reasons for ineligibility so I’m not picky about theme, subject matter or disciplines as long as it is experimental in some way. My only possible issue may be length as I only have an hour per slot so anything too long might be tricky to fit in, but that is not a definite restriction at this stage.
As the event is free to submit to, I get a lot of films sent through, so it may take me a while to get round to watching your work and also to reply, so please have patience and I will be in touch when I can.
There is no fee for filmmakers to submit to the screenings but you should be aware that a fee is charged to audience who attend the screening to help me cover the costs of putting the night on. I mention that because some people aren’t okay with giving their work for free to a paid entry gig, and that’s totally cool. Obviously, if you have a film on at the festival you (and hopefully some cast/crew -depending on numbers) can come for free to watch and introduce your film.
If you have any questions then please use the above link to get in touch and I’ll do my best to answer if I can.
Thank you in advance for sending me your work!
Cheers!
Richard
